Paid internship in Germany for international students (EU-citizen)

As a EU-citizen, you have unlimited access to the German labour market. Here are a few steps to keep in mind if you are staying more than 90 days and do a paid internship in Germany.

 

 

 

 

 

 

Registration

If you do a paid internship in Germany and plan to spend more than 90 days in the country, you have to register at the local townhall within 7 days after arrival. You will have to bring your rental agreement and a valid ID/Passport.

Tax Identification Number

You should automatically receive your Tax ID from the Bundeszentralamt fuer Steuern (BZSt) via post after the registration at the town hall. This you will have to hand over to your employer so that he can make your income tax reduction. Attention: If you do not have the Tax ID, you have to apply for it at the townhall, even if you are staying less than 90 days!

Bank information

You will need to provide an account to receive the salary. It is recommended to open a bank account in Germany, but for short stays, you can also use your European account. Keep in mind you might face fees when withdrawing money from the cash machines!

Insurances

Health Insurance

You need a European Health Card (EHIC). In Germany, the contribution is 14,6% of the gross wage and is shared equally between the employer and employee. You inform your employer about your health insurance and he will register you. The contribution is automatically subtracted from your salary.

Social insurance number

The number is received with the registration via your employer at the health insurance and lasts life-long.

If you want to do a holiday job in Germany, you might be able to save insurance contribution fees. Send an immatriculation confirmation to your employer, they will know about the exact conditions. You can receive a template sent by ZAV.

IMPORTANT:  You should have a private accidental insurance and a liability insurance. Double check if they are valid in Germany!
